Basketball court resurfacing
The basketball court in the 600 Area has recently been resurfaced. This work was part of a Facilities Management and Services (FMS) Amenities Office Initiative to partner with the official Argonne Clubs to enhance the work/life balance of employees at the laboratory. The new FMS Argonne Club Initiative recognizes the integral role of the Argonne Clubs in creating an enjoyable work environment and seeks to provide support to improve and increase participation in clubs and club events.
After being contacted by FMS, Senior Health Physics Technician and President of the Argonne Basketball League (ABL), Johnny Reed (ESQ) immediately thought of the 600 Area basketball court as a worth-while improvement as well as a safety concern. The basketball court was breaking apart in several key areas which posed serious safety hazards to players. The court is an important amenity at the laboratory as it is used heavily during the spring, summer and fall months before winter.
The 600 Area court resurfacing work was completed by the FMS Rapid Response team which is deployed around the laboratory for key renovation and safety projects. The court now features a special, cushioned material for the court top, instead of the usual asphalt black top.
This specialty material is made of a durable, padded foam surface that retains a crisp look and reduces stress on an athlete’s joints during a game. The material is an excellent shock absorber that improves ball responsiveness and playability as well. An asphalt top is prone to cracks, breaks and separations. In time asphalt top defects contribute to player injuries as individuals can easily slip and fall on loose asphalt.
It’s extremely rewarding to be able to help bring about improvements like these for the Argonne Club organizations knowing that they contribute in such a positive and visible way to the overall work environment at the laboratory.

The new, resurfaced court includes a brilliant Argonne delta logo emblazed on the surface and is a pleasant surprise for the Argonne Basketball League (ABL). This year the ABL will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on the new court with its annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which takes place from June through August.
The new court is awesome!
It is really comfortable to play on, has nice traction, is much safer and looks unbelievable. In addition to being a fun way to stay fit and achieve my wellness goals, playing in the 3-on-3 tournament over the last 16 years has allowed me to meet people from all over the lab that I would not have met otherwise, share an experience and make a very large organization feel much smaller.
Devin Hodge, Deputy Director, Operations (JCESR)
The idea for the tournament is the work of Johnny Reed’s brother, ESH Coordinator Leon Reed (HEP), who suggested having a basketball tournament series at Argonne. Johnny Reed followed through with his brother’s concept and created the Argonne tournament. The 3-on-3 is a laboratory community favorite and brings researchers, support personnel and senior management out onto the courts for lunchtime games.
