How Workday fits into Argonne’s IT strategy
by Stu Hannay, Argonne Chief Information Officer
Workday is a vital part of the ArgonneNEXT “Information Systems” foundation — the vision and plan for transforming Argonne’s business systems. The goal is a seamless virtual environment in which business and operations processes are streamlined and efficient.
If you haven’t yet heard of Workday, see the previous Focal Point articles by Argonne Chief Operations Officer Paul Kearns, who introduced the new system, and HR Director Tracey Rossett, who provided a short overview of the need for a new system.
In terms of streamlining, Workday will replace several legacy systems, including HRIS, the Position Description System/HR Requisitions, Merit System, Performance Appraisal System, Benefits Open Enrollment and some HR forms. Every Argonne employee will use one or more of these systems in a typical year; some will access them more often and a few use them all the time. Workday combines all these functions into a single, easy-to-use system.
Ease of use has been front and center as this system readies for deployment. Your colleagues and co-workers from across the laboratory, more than 80 of them, helped configure the system for Argonne’s needs. In addition, more than 300 people from across the lab have participated in testing and been hands on with Workday, and their comments have been overwhelmingly positive.
From an information technology perspective, Workday is a generational step forward from the systems it replaces. It’s a cloud-based solution that will regularly deliver upgrades and improvements in the months and years ahead. You’ll be able to securely access the system directly from a browser, allowing you to take care of business, wherever you are and whenever you need to, from your desktop, laptop, tablet or phone.
Cyber security and ensuring your data is safe is also a key part of the choice of Workday. There are a number of third-party accreditations (specifically SOC 1, SOC2, ISO 27001 and the European Safe Harbour Privacy Framework) that, along with our own Cyber team review, ensure that the system complies with current and future standards and best practices for access, transmission, and storage of our information. All data is encrypted at rest and during transmission, physical access is protected through multiple layers of authentication and biometric security measures.
Workday will launch at the end of July and the CIS Help Desk and HR staff will be trained and ready to assist if you have questions.
The Workday4Argonne website has more details about the project, including frequently asked questions. I encourage you to take advantage of the training and familiarization sessions that will be offered across the site. Watch Argonne Today for additional information.
