January JumpStarts: early-career fellowships, ‘teaching vs. presenting’
There will be two JumpStart meetings in January 2016 — the first, on Tuesday, Jan. 12, will provide tips for employees who find themselves in teaching situations. And on Tuesday, Jan. 26, the focus will be on early-career scientists and engineers interested in learning more about Argonne’s Named Fellowships.
Both meetings will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Bistro 213 Work Cafe Private Dining Room. All are welcome to attend and bring their lunches. There is no cost or registration required.
“Teaching vs. Presenting”
Most of us, at some point in our careers, have presented to a group. However, when we are asked to assume the role of a teacher, do the same rules apply? Are the elements of a good presentation the same as those of a good lesson? It turns out that teaching requires a completely different mindset than presenting.
In “Teaching vs. Presenting,” Meridith Bruozas and John Domyancich from CEPA’s Educational Programs will guide participants through the process of designing and implementing a lesson. Emphasis will be placed on developing active students, organizing content into a storyline, and questioning techniques. This interactive and engaging experience will provide useful strategies for those teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level or any others that wish to become more effective educators at any level.
Early-career scientists and engineers will want to attend the JumpStart meeting Tuesday, Feb. 9, to learn about Argonne’s Named Fellowships.
The Named Fellowships were established to attract highly talented postdoctoral scientists and engineers to Argonne. Speaker Tina Henne will help potential applicants navigate the process by explaining:
- The application package requirements
- The sponsor’s nomination memo
- Review process and criteria for selection
The meetings will be livestreamed on Blue Jeans, the laboratory’s videoconferencing service.

About the JumpStart Series
The JumpStart series is a friendly, informal forum for employees to develop new tools and knowledge that will enable individual and collective success. We hope to inform R&D employees about the mission support services available to help them do their jobs more efficiently and effectively. When available, presentation materials will be made available on the Jumpstart website on Inside Argonne.
The format is a monthly brown-bag meeting at lunchtime in the Building 213 Cafeteria. Meetings will include 30 to 45 minutes of presentation followed by Q&A. When available, presentation materials will be made available on the Jumpstart website on Inside Argonne.
