Tirrell testifies at House Committee meeting on material science
Matthew Tirrell, Argonne’s deputy laboratory director for science and chief research officer, testified before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology June 28, 2017.
The hearing’s topic was “Material Science: Building the Future.” Joining Tirrell, who also manages Argonne’s Laboratory-Directed Research and Development program, were Laurie Locascio, acting associate director for laboratory programs and director, Material Measurement Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology; Adam Schwartz, director of Ames Laboratory; and Fred Higgs, John and Ann Doerr professor of Mechanical Engineering, Rice University.
Tirrell answered committee members’ questions on:
- Access to national laboratory R&D expertise and tools
- Composite materials for construction and additive manufacturing (“3-D printing”)
- The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade, and the importance of national laboratory user facilities
- Technology licensing and corporate investment in R&D
