Argonne a Federal Green Challenge winner
Argonne National Laboratory was recognized as a regional award winner in the 2017 Federal Green Challenge, a national effort under the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Sustainable Materials Management Program, which challenges EPA and other federal agencies throughout the country to lead by example in reducing the federal government’s environmental impact.
Argonne won in three categories:
- Waste, for increasing their municipal solid waste recycling rate by over 800 percent due to stepped up efforts by the lab’s Clean Sweep program.
- Transportation, for increasing teleworking miles by 43 percent by better integrating remote working tools and video conferencing.
- Innovation, by implementing an innovative project to reuse industrial wastewater to clean out wastewater tanks and lines in the lab’s treatment plant, saving more than 3 million gallons of potable water.
