The Argonne Fire Department and the site’s U.S. Department of Agriculture wildlife services representative were recently called out to rescue a young raccoon. The animal was in an oak tree near Bldg. 201 — with its head stuck in what appeared to be a soup can.
USDA Assistant District Supervisor Aaron Spencer, provided with a ladder by the Argonne Fire Department, brought the stricken animal down to the ground. Both wearing heavy gloves to protect from bites and scratches, Spencer and Argonne Fire Department Lieutenant Bob Wingo removed the can with tin snips. The raccoon bolted away, apparently unharmed by the ordeal.
