Awardees announced for Cohort 2 of Launchpad Program
The Argonne Commercialization Council (ACC) and the Technology Commercialization and Partnerships Division (TCP) are pleased to announce the awardees who will make up Cohort 2 of the Launchpad Program (formerly known as the Program Development Rotation).
The researchers who will begin their participation in Cohort 2 of Launchpad at the start of FY18, and their respective topic areas, are:
- Janardhan Kodavasal (ES) – New Areas in Applying Machine Learning and Big Data to Simulation-Driven Design for Propulsion Applications
- David Rotsch (NE) – Developing a Radioisotope R&D and Production Program
- Duane Verner (GSS) – Aligning Argonne Capabilities to Meet Emerging Global Security Challenges
Launchpad, which targets early and mid-career researchers who have a vision for building a technology program, provides participants with resources, training and time to develop a growth strategy for their respective proposed programs. Resources include mentorship from a senior leader at Argonne and access to a dedicated support team (Business Development, Marketing Communications, etc.). The ultimate goal of Launchpad is to help researchers build a technology program that can scale to approximately $10 million in annual sponsored research within three to five years.
Participants devote a portion (up to 50 percent) of their time to working closely with TCP and other Mission Support functions, while spending the remainder of their time conducting their primary research. The portion of staff effort dedicated to program development is paid for by TCP.
The program was launched at the beginning of FY17 as an additional driver of new programs that grow Argonne’s research portfolio and sponsorship thereof. In addition to growing Argonne’s research portfolio and sponsorship streams, Launchpad also serves as a career development opportunity for future leaders of Argonne.
The researchers who make up Cohort 1 of Launchpad are in the final stages of their one-year program. All participants have developed their value proposition hypotheses, identified target sponsors, developed marketing presentations to engage with these sponsors, and are in discussions with potential sponsors who have expressed interest in their work. The Cohort 1 members also have support from within Argonne for continuing to grow their respective programs following the end of their Launchpad assignments.
For Cohort 2, the ACC and TCP received high-quality proposals from several qualified candidates and would like to acknowledge all who applied for their efforts in developing and submitting strong proposals. TCP is continuing discussions with those who were not selected for Cohort 2, with an eye toward supporting their pursuit of their ideas, as relevant.
