In memoriam: Merwyn Brodsky
Merwyn Brodsky, a member of Argonne’s Materials Science Division (MSD) for nearly 50 years, died on Feb. 10, 2018, at the age of 87. Brodsky led the actinide research group before assuming the position of MSD Associate Division Director. Brodsky also served as editor of “Physica C” during the early stages of the high temperature superconductivity era.
After receiving his B.S. degree in chemistry from Roosevelt University in 1949, and his Ph.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1954, Brodsky worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory until 1958 before starting his career at Argonne, which lasted until 2006 — the last nine years as a special term appointee.
A funeral service will be conducted at the chapel at Westlawn Cemetery followed by a graveside burial on Feb. 19, 2018, at 11 a.m. The family will receive visitors that afternoon at the Sedgebrook Retirement Community in Lincolnshire. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, Congregation Am Echad in Homewood, Illinois, the Southern Poverty Law Center or the Anti-Defamation League.
