Alan Kastengren (XSD) receives April 2018 Gold Spot Award
In April 2018, Alan Kastengren (XSD) received a Gold Spot Award for his preemptive measures taken to mitigate a tripping hazard.
Contractors were moving equipment in and out of a hutch when Kastengren observed one of the workers nearly trip when the individual’s foot snagged on a metal bridge that was placed over a door’s threshold. Taking a closer look, Kastengren noticed that the bridge was in bad condition and was not safe for use. He immediately notified the beamline safety coordinator to have the bridge removed and replaced with a new one.
Thanks to Kastengren’s safety leadership, the hazard was mitigated and a safe work environment was reestablished.
Spot Awards give employees “on-the-spot” recognition for positive safety or quality assurance initiative. The Spot Award program offers three award levels: gold ($100), silver ($50) and bronze ($25).
If you see an employee exhibiting behavior that warrants positive recognition (e.g., safe behavior or process improvements), you can nominate that individual for a Spot Award by submitting Spot Award (ANL-758).
The form will be routed to the individual’s supervisor and division for approval. Observers may award employees from their own division or from other divisions. The cost of the award is charged to the recipient’s division.
Additional information about the Spot Award program is available on Inside Argonne.
