Director’s message: Partial government shutdown update
I hope everyone had a very safe and restful holiday break, and is ready for another great year.
As you may recall, on Sept. 21, 2018, the President signed into law a spending package for FY 2019 that included funding for the U.S. Department of Energy. This action secured the necessary funding for Argonne to meet its mission needs for this fiscal year. It was also a major milestone and the first time in more than 20 years that DOE was able to begin the fiscal year with an approved budget. Other agencies, however, may not be operating under an approved budget and may be affected as the partial federal government shutdown enters its second week. Less than 4.5 percent of Argonne’s funding for FY 2018 came from departments affected by the shutdown.
Argonne’s senior leadership team has reviewed the financial position of those programs that receive funding from non-DOE sources, and at this time, the current amount of funding already received by the laboratory appears to be sufficient to sustain operations for the foreseeable future without interruption. Please coordinate with your division or directorate management on any issues regarding your specific project funding to ensure continuity.
I will share any new information regarding the government’s budget process as it becomes available and I encourage you to talk with your management team as well.
Thank you for your continued commitment to Argonne’s mission of accelerating the science and technology that drive U.S. prosperity and security.
