Institute for Molecular Engineering at Argonne now known as Center for Molecular Engineering
In light of the recent announcement that the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago has received a $100 million commitment from the Pritzker Foundation and will become the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME), the Institute for Molecular Engineering at Argonne (IME@Argonne) is changing its name to the Center for Molecular Engineering (CME).
PME and CME remain partner organizations. CME will continue to contribute its unique and powerful scientific instrumentation, global leadership in computing, and breadth of scientific and engineering expertise to the partnership, with focus areas in materials-for-water, quantum information science and technology, and soft matter science and engineering.
UChicago will be the first university in the U.S. with a school dedicated to this emerging field, and Matthew Tirrell — founding director of the Institute and senior scientist in the Materials Science division — will become dean of the PME. PME is the university’s first new school in three decades and its first school in engineering. Over time, the Pritzker commitment will allow for expansion to address other fundamental problems and promote new collaborations among leading researchers from diverse science and engineering disciplines.
The support and subsequent expansion of UChicago’s work in molecular engineering will positively affect CME in multiple ways:
- The Pritzker commitment and UChicago’s establishment of the school raises the visibility and awareness of what molecular engineering has to offer.
- The announcement establishes greater Chicago as the leading center for molecular engineering research in the U.S.
- Molecular engineering faculty at UChicago will double, and each of these individuals will have the opportunity to explore joint appointments at Argonne when there is mutual benefit.
- Partnerships in CME’s focus areas will have new opportunities to grow, including through the expanding presence of UChicago students on the Argonne site.
Seth Darling, who served as director of IME@Argonne since its inception, will continue to lead the organization under the new CME name.
