‘Big Data and Social Science’ editors include Argonne’s Ian Foster
“Big Data and Social Science: A Practical Guide to Methods and Tools,” edited by Argonne Computation Institute Director Ian Foster (MCS), Rayid Ghani, Ron S. Jarmin, Frauke Kreuter and Julia Lane, has been published by CRC press.
An Argonne Senior Scientist and Distinguished Fellow, Foster is an Executive Advisory Committee member and senior fellow at the Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology. His is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and in Physical Sciences at the University of Chicago.
The book project developed from an educational program for the U.S. Census and that continues for other statistical agencies, Foster said.
The book provides social scientists with an understanding of the key elements of this new science, its value and the opportunities for doing better work. The goal is also to identify the many ways in which the analytical toolkits possessed by social scientists can be brought to bear to enhance the generalizability of the work done by computer scientists.
